Private Chinese lessons in Amsterdam, with a qualified tutor
Private Chinese lessons in Amsterdam and online, built entirely around you: your goal, your level, your schedule. One teacher, one plan, and the fastest route from where you are now to where you want to be with Mandarin.
Looking for a Chinese tutor in Amsterdam usually means scrolling through marketplace profiles, guessing who can actually teach. Zoey (Ziqiao Zang) is a professionally trained teacher of Chinese as a foreign language, with a master’s degree in exactly that subject and more than fifteen years of classroom experience, nine of them in the Netherlands. Her private Chinese lessons are for adults who want real progress, not just conversation practice.

What private lessons include
A private Mandarin tutor should do more than turn up and talk. With Zoey, one-to-one lessons include:
- A placement assessment. If you have learned Chinese before, you start with a short level check: a conversation at your level and a few reading and listening tasks. Complete beginners skip this and start straight away.
- A personal study plan. Based on your goal and the time you have, Zoey sets out what you will learn and in what order: the first month in detail, the months after in outline. Preparing for an exam? The plan works back from the exam date.
- Materials chosen for you. Lesson slides, word lists, short texts and listening exercises, often from her own collection of stories and the KeSong YouTube channel. Exam candidates work with official-style practice papers.
- Progress reports. At regular intervals you look back together at what you can now do, which mistakes have disappeared and which still need work, and the plan is adjusted.
- Feedback between lessons on written homework, so you do not practise mistakes for a week.
Who private Chinese lessons suit best
- Busy professionals whose agenda changes every week. One-to-one lessons move with you: early morning, lunchtime, evenings.
- Learners with a fixed deadline: an HSK exam, a posting to China, a business trip, a wedding in the family. A private plan is the most efficient route to a date.
- Learners who want a fully personal plan: a specific vocabulary (medicine, law, design, logistics), a specific skill (reading novels, writing emails), or a specific weakness (tones!).
- Returners who learned Chinese years ago and want to reactivate it without sitting through a beginners’ course again.
In person in Amsterdam or online
Private lessons are available in two forms, and you can switch between them:
- In person in Amsterdam, by arrangement. You agree the location with Zoey when planning the lessons. For companies, lessons can take place in-company at your office.
- Online on Zoom, the main format: no travel, easy to fit around work, available wherever you are. See online Chinese lessons for how they work.
Both use the same plan and materials: the same teacher and the same method, wherever you are. If you live south of the city, see also Chinese lessons in Amstelveen.
Why €60 an hour, when marketplace tutors charge €15–35?
You will see Chinese tutors advertised from €5 to €35 an hour on platforms such as Superprof, Preply or italki. Some of them are good. So why does a private Chinese tutor with Zoey cost €60?
| What you get | Typical marketplace tutor | Private lessons with Zoey |
|---|---|---|
| Teacher training | Varies; often none | Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages |
| Experience | Varies | Teaching Chinese since 2011, in the Netherlands since 2016 |
| Lesson plan | Often improvised | Personal plan with clear milestones |
| Materials | Often the learner’s own | Prepared for your goal |
| HSK expertise | Varies | Set up and ran an official HSK online test centre (250+ candidates) |
| Progress tracking | Rare | Regular progress reviews |
| Time behind each hour | The hour itself | The hour, plus preparation and feedback |
The honest comparison is not price per hour but price per result. A cheaper tutor without a plan can easily take twice as many hours to get you to the same level. If you just want relaxed conversation with a native speaker, a marketplace may suit you fine. If you want a structured route to a goal, a qualified teacher is the better investment.
Is getting a Chinese tutor worth it?
It is one of the most common questions learners ask, and the answer depends on what you want. Apps such as Duolingo or HelloChinese are good for vocabulary and habit, and they are free or cheap. What they cannot do is listen to you. Chinese has four tones plus a neutral tone, sounds that do not exist in English or Dutch, and a word order that is easy to understand but easy to get subtly wrong. Those are exactly the areas where a Chinese teacher makes the difference, by hearing the problem and fixing it before it becomes a habit.
A tutor is worth it most when:
- you want to speak, not only recognise words;
- you have a deadline (exam, trip, job);
- you have tried apps and plateaued;
- you need specialised language for work.
Zoey’s advice: use apps for daily repetition and a teacher for what apps cannot do. Her guide to the best apps to learn Chinese explains how to combine the two.
How to start
Send a short enquiry with your goal, your level and the times that suit you. Zoey replies personally to arrange an intake and, if you have studied before, a placement assessment. You then receive a proposed plan and schedule. Payment and times are arranged directly with her; nothing is paid online. Read more about Zoey or see the prices.
Frequently asked questions
Is getting a Chinese tutor worth it?
If you want to speak and understand Chinese, usually yes. Tones, pronunciation and word order are hard to fix on your own, and a good tutor spots your recurring mistakes and gives you a plan. It is worth it most when the tutor is a trained teacher with a clear curriculum, not only a native speaker to chat with.
How is a private Chinese tutor different from a group course?
In a one-to-one lesson every minute is yours: you speak far more, the pace follows your progress and the content follows your goal. Group courses are cheaper per hour and sociable, but they move at the speed of the group. Many learners start one-to-one and join a small group later, or the other way round.
Where do in-person private lessons in Amsterdam take place?
In-person lessons are arranged individually: the location is agreed with Zoey when you plan your lessons, and in-company lessons take place at your office. Most private learners combine a few in-person sessions with online lessons, which are the main format.
How many private lessons do I need?
That depends on your goal. As a rough guide, complete beginners need around 40–60 lesson hours, plus self-study, to pass HSK 1, and twice that for HSK 2. After the intake, Zoey gives you a realistic estimate for your own goal and schedule.
Can I book a single private lesson?
Private lessons work best as a series, because progress comes from regular practice. If you need help with one specific thing, such as checking a presentation in Chinese or a last review before an exam, mention it in your enquiry and Zoey will tell you what is possible.
