Online Chinese lessons, live with a qualified teacher
Online Chinese lessons with Zoey are live, structured and personal: you see and hear your teacher, practise speaking from the first minute and follow a plan built around your goal. One-to-one or in a small group, from Amsterdam to anywhere in Europe and beyond.
You can learn Chinese online with an app, with a video course or with a tutor you found on a marketplace. Those all have their place. But if you want to really speak, read and understand Mandarin, nothing replaces a teacher who listens to you, corrects you at the right moment and knows exactly what comes next. That is what these online Mandarin classes are: real lessons, delivered live on Zoom, by a teacher who has done this for more than fifteen years.
How a live online Chinese lesson works
Every lesson takes place on Zoom, the platform Zoey has used for years to teach learners across the Netherlands. You join with a link; nothing to install if you use the browser.
- Warm-up (5 minutes). A short conversation in Chinese about your week, at your level. For beginners that might be three sentences; for HSK 4 learners, a real discussion.
- New material (20–25 minutes). New words and a grammar pattern, presented on an interactive whiteboard Zoey designs herself in Canva: pinyin colour-coded by tone, characters large enough to see every stroke, images and short texts that put the words in context.
- Speaking practice (15–20 minutes). You use the pattern in your own sentences. Zoey corrects tones and word order on the spot, the part of learning Chinese that an app cannot do.
- Wrap-up (5 minutes). A quick review, and homework that fits your week: a few sentences to write, a short story to listen to, characters to practise.
Materials. You receive the lesson slides and word lists digitally. Beginners usually work with a structured series that follows the HSK levels, so you always know where you are; learners with specific goals (business, an exam, a trip) get material chosen for that goal.
Homework. Short and regular rather than long and occasional. Fifteen minutes a day does more for your Chinese than two hours on Sunday. Many learners also record themselves reading a dialogue on their phone and compare it with the model: a simple habit that sharpens your ear for tones.
Online Chinese classes for adults, at every level
These online Chinese classes for adults cover the same range as in-person lessons:
- Complete beginners start with pinyin, the four tones and survival phrases such as 谢谢xièxie and 我不懂wǒ bù dǒng. See Chinese for beginners.
- HSK candidates prepare for HSK 1–6 and the HSKK speaking test online, including timed mock exams on screen, which is exactly how the internet-based HSK test works. See HSK preparation.
- Professionals take business Chinese online between meetings: presentations, emails, negotiation phrases and the cultural codes behind them. See Business Chinese.
- Conversation learners use online lessons for focused speaking practice. See conversation classes.
Time zones: Chinese lessons online from Amsterdam
Zoey teaches from Amsterdam, so lessons are planned in Central European Time (CET/CEST). That works for:
| Where you are | Typical lesson times (your local time) |
|---|---|
| Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France | Morning, lunchtime or evening |
| United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal | One hour earlier than in Amsterdam |
| Eastern Europe, Middle East | One to three hours later |
| China, Singapore, Hong Kong | Late afternoon or evening there = morning in Amsterdam |
| East coast of the US and Canada | Morning there = afternoon in Amsterdam |
Morning slots are popular with people who want to study before work; see the conversation and morning classes. Exact times are agreed after your enquiry.
Online or in person?
Both formats use the same method, the same materials and the same teacher. The differences are practical:
| Online | In person in Amsterdam | |
|---|---|---|
| Travel time | None | Depends on location |
| Pronunciation feedback | Very clear with a headset | Very clear |
| Writing characters | On paper, shown to the camera, or on a tablet | On paper, side by side |
| Flexibility | Highest: easy to fit in a lunch break | By arrangement |
| Best for | Busy professionals, learners outside Amsterdam, exam prep | Learners who prefer a classroom feel, in-company teams |
Many learners combine the two: a few in-person sessions to start, then online lessons for regularity. If you want to meet in person, see private Chinese lessons in Amsterdam.
Your first step: enquiry and intake
You start by sending a short enquiry: your goal, your level and the times that suit you. Zoey replies personally to plan an intake. For learners who have studied before, this includes a short placement assessment, so the first real lesson starts at the right level instead of repeating the basics. After that, you receive a proposed plan: how many lessons per week, what the first month covers, and which materials you will use.
Structured lessons versus a random online Chinese tutor
Search for an online Chinese tutor or Chinese tutor online and you will find marketplaces with hundreds of profiles from €5 to €35 an hour. Some of those tutors are excellent; many are native speakers without teacher training. The difference shows after a few months:
- A plan instead of a chat. Conversation with a native speaker is pleasant, but without a curriculum you plateau quickly. Zoey’s lessons follow a clear progression, so you know what you will be able to do next month.
- Correction that sticks. A trained teacher notices patterns in your mistakes (the same tone pair, the same word-order slip) and designs practice to fix them for good.
- Exam knowledge. If HSK is your goal, you are learning with someone who set up and ran an official HSK online test centre with more than 250 candidates, not with someone who has only read about the exam.
- One teacher, every lesson. No switching profiles, no explaining your level again.
That is why one-to-one online lessons cost €60 per hour. If you are comparing options, the prices page explains exactly what is included.
The video loads from YouTube when you press play.
Zoey’s YouTube channel shows her teaching style: short stories at each HSK level, with pinyin, subtitles and the grammar explained. It is a good way to see whether her lessons suit you, and free extra listening practice between lessons.
Is online the best way to learn Mandarin?
There is no single best online Chinese course for everyone. The best place to learn Chinese online is the one that matches your goal and keeps you coming back. For a holiday, an app may be enough. For a real conversation, an exam or work, you need speaking practice with feedback, and that is where live online lessons with a teacher earn their place.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need for online Chinese lessons?
A laptop or tablet with a camera, a headset or earphones with a microphone, a stable internet connection and a quiet spot. Zoom runs in the browser or as a free app. A notebook for writing characters by hand is useful too. You receive the materials digitally before or after each lesson.
Are online Chinese classes as effective as lessons in person?
For most adults, yes. Pronunciation is easier to hear and correct with a good headset than across a classroom, the whiteboard and materials are always in front of you, and you save travel time, so you can study more often. What matters most is a structured plan and a teacher who gives real feedback.
Can I take online Chinese lessons from outside the Netherlands?
Yes. Lessons are planned in Central European Time and work well from anywhere in Europe, and from Asia, Africa or the Americas when the time difference allows a morning or evening slot. You agree the times with Zoey after your enquiry.
How often should I take online Chinese lessons?
Twice a week is ideal for steady progress, with short daily practice in between. Once a week works if you study on your own between lessons. Shorter, more frequent sessions often beat one long lesson, especially for beginners working on tones.
How much do online Chinese lessons cost?
A one-to-one lesson costs €60 per hour, the same as in person. Group fees depend on the number of learners and are confirmed after a placement assessment. There is no online payment on this site; you arrange times and payment directly with Zoey.
